Have you ever wanted to start a garden but stopped in your tracks because you didn’t have a machine to do everything for you? Then you’re in luck. Welcome to the world of FarmBot.

Billed as “humanity’s first open-source CNC farming machine,” FarmBot plants seeds, waters them precisely, and even stomps out weeds. What, you may ask, is an open-source CNC farming machine? As the bearded founder explains in another video, FarmBot’s software, hardware plans, 3D models, and documentation are free to download and improve upon. They are looking for collaborators to create a “new paradigm of farming.” So while my general machine cynicism and frequent viewings of The Matrix lead me to believe that this is a terrible idea, I can’t help but be swayed by FarmBot’s green vision for the future.
Other than all the bells and whistles (FarmBot allows you to configure your crops using a video game interface—What!), the device could actually change the way we farm. By monitoring the soil and watering plants with the exact amount they need, FarmBot creates a more sustainable model. Even the return on investment—apparently three to five years—means that you could eventually grow all your own food for less than it costs to go to the grocery store. The price is even reasonable. $2,000 of the $2,900 pre-order goes to the actual cost of the hardware. With the ability to add things like rainwater catchers, solar panels, and lights, the pot farmers of the world can also rejoice over an easier, more sustainable way to grow bud.
Shipping of the product doesn’t start until February 2017, so enjoy the provided machine porn in the meantime.
